| These are "aging rays" that penetrate deep within the skin. They are responsible for photoaging effects such as wrinkles and sagging, and as the effects accumulate over time may also increase the risk of skin cancer. UVA rays are equally strong throughout daylight hours and all through the year, and they call for daily protection. | |
| These are "burning rays" that affect the surface layer of your skin and are responsible for sunburn. UVB rays are strongest in spring and summer months, and between 10am and 2pm. They're also stronger in tropical regions close to the equator, and at high altitudes. |
30-50% of UVA cuts through the epidermis and reaches the dermis. Acute exposure to UV rays causes serious cellular damage.
The damage builds and causes the skin to form wrinkles and lose firmness.

Snow and water have a particularly high rate of reflectivity.
Even in weak winter sunlight, snow reflects more than 80% of the sun's UV rays, resulting in UV levels that are 1.8 times what they would be with no snow.
This is why skiing and snowboarding call for special attention - so when you're enjoying winter sports, don't forget to use broad spectrum sun-protection products with a high SPF.
So you need protection from the sun whenever you're exposed, even if you're indoors or inside a car. Even a small amount of daily sun exposure has the potential to damage the skin.
Enjoy your daily UV protection in style with wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, reducing sun exposure especially on your face and eyes, and by wearing black and other dark colors that make it more difficult for UV rays to penetrate.
To keep your skin looking youthful, be sure to include UV protection at the end of your morning skincare routine every day.
Vitamin C, D, E, B2, and taking good sleep also help reinforce health function to protect yourself against UV damage of health and beauty.
Since Shiseido launched its first sunscreen, Shiseido Uviolin, in 1923, Shiseido research has evolved sun protection technology over the years to respond to consumers' needs. Shiseido has also conducted numerous consumer education programs concerning the proper usage of suncare products, and has played an active part in the international standardization of UV-protection measurements.
In 1980, Shiseido indicated the SPF - Sun Protection Factor, a global indication of UVB protection - on "Shiseido SUN SCREEN," a first for Japan. This move prompted fierce competition in the market to achieve high SPF and to carry out research on UVB absorbents. Shiseido research developed "Sunguard B", one of the most revolutionary absorbents at that time.
However, the efficacy of sun protection has been called into question as many people discovered that there was a difference between the SPF indicated on the product and the actual protection level. As a leader in the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association (JCIA), Shiseido proposed a new SPF measurement system using artificial sunlight, which was highly praised around the world. In this way, Shiseido contributed significantly to the development of an international SPF standard.
Since the 1980s, the impact of UVA on the skin has been a focal point for global research. Shiseido, as the leader of skincare research and technology, has conducted extensive laboratory research on the relationship between UVA and skin aging.
Research findings have been applied not only to products for the Japanese market but also to products around the world. Shiseido was among the first to indicate the level of UVA protection on the product.
Suncare products with the indication of "Water-Resistant (80 minutes)" or "Very water-resistant" means the products have passed a water-resistant test that meets each country's regulation, to retain SPF for 80 continuous minutes in water.
Suncare products with the indication of "Water-Resistant (40 minutes)" or "Water-resistant" means the products have passed a water-resistant test that meets each country's regulation, to retain SPF for 40 continuous minutes in water.
Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure to sun. Reapply every two to three hours to maintain effective protection, especially after perspiring, swimming and towel drying, as sunscreen can be wiped off.
Step 1: If your skin is badly burned, immediately go see a doctor.
Step 2: If your skin is burning, cool it down with water or ice. Do not use soap or cosmetics that could irritate your skin.
Step 3: Once your skin is soothed, apply softener and moisturizer, or use recommended after-sun treatments to regain the moisture balance that was lost through sun exposure.
SPF indicates the length of protection before your skin may show signs of sunburn.
For example, a sunscreen with SPF 50 will postpone 50 times the length of time before your skin may show signs of sunburn.
If your skin usually starts to burn after 5 minutes exposure to UV rays, SPF 50 sunscreen will protect your skin before sunburn occurs for approximately 4 hours (SPF 50 x 5min = 250min).
*when the condition of UV rays energy is constant and the applied amount is 2mg per 1 square
However, with perspiration and other physical activities, it is recommended to reapply every two to three hours to maintain effective protection.

As the final step of your morning skincare routine, take some sunscreen in the palm of your hand, and apply with your fingertips to five points on your face - the left and right cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. When using a lotion type sunscreen, be sure to shake well before applying. |

Starting with broad areas of the face such as the cheeks and forehead, begin from the center and gradually blend and smooth the sunscreen in an outward direction. |

Apply sunscreen to several spots on the neckline and blend in an upward direction from the base of the neck. Be sure to apply coverage to areas between the eyebrows, the hairline, the edge of the chin, the outer side of the nostrils, and the ears. |
Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure to sun.
Application tends to become uneven if you apply little by little or too much at once. To enhance the sunscreen effect, we recommend overlaying foundation.
If you prefer to not use foundation during leisure or outdoor activities, apply an appropriate dosage of sunscreen and overlay the same amount to give a double coat.

Apply directly from the package in strips. When using a lotion type sunscreen, be sure to shake well before applying. |

Using the palm of your hand pressed flat against your skin, blend and smooth the product in an outward direction using large circular motions. |
Be careful not to leave out the sides of your arms and legs, and your shoulders and chest, as these areas can be easily burned.
Don't forget the sides of your body, the backs of your hands, your instep, your knees (front and back), and underneath the edges of your swimwear.
Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure to sun. In order to maintain effective protection, we recommend to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.
More frequent reapplication of sunscreen is recommended if you're particularly sensitive to UV light or if you burn easily, and after a long swim, after perspiring, and after towel-drying.

Regardless of the season or the weather, your skin is exposed to UV rays. Outdoor sports call for special protection, and even a small amount of daily sun exposure, even through a layer of glass, has the potential to damage your skin. To keep your skin looking youthful, be sure to include UV protection at the end of your morning skincare routine every day.
There are two types of UV rays that affect your skin:
UVA - These are "aging rays" that penetrate deep within the skin, and are equally strong throughout daylight hours and all through the year.
UVB - These are "burning rays" that are responsible for sunburn, strongest in spring and summer months, and between 10am and 2pm. UVB is stronger in tropical regions close to the equator, and at high altitudes.
With its origins as a pharmacy and its history of more than 140 years of skincare research, SHISEIDO was among the first companies to focus attention on UVA protection. SHISEIDO has received 18 awards and 77 international patents related to suncare products.
*As of July 2011. Include all patented and patent-pending suncare products for Europe, America and Asia.
